Healing from Sunburn with Essential Oils

Excess exposure to the sun caused Sunburn. The symptoms include redness and pain with slight swelling and inflammation.

Aloe Vera, which is anti-inflammatory and healing, has been used for centuries to heal burns. Lavender and tea tree essential oils are best to be added to make a first aid treatment for sunburn. The ultimate method to treat sunburned skin is to soak in a bath with an abundance of healing herbs, soothing essential oils and aloe vera.

Lavender and peppermint are ideal match to take to the bath for sunburns. Lavender helps to calms the skin while peppermint (small amount) is for cooling.

Honey can be used as a healing agent for dressing because it is anti-bacteria and anti-flammatory. When essential oils are added into it, its effect multiplied.

Aromatic After-sun Bath Recipe

1/4 cup of herbs: calendura,comfrey, raspberry leaf, slippery elm

1 qt boiling water

1/2 cup baking soda

1/2 cup apple cider vinegar or Witch hazel lotion

1/2 cup Aloe vera gel or juice

2 tbls. honey

2 drops Lavender Essential Oil

1 drop Peppermint Essential oil

Note: For small children or to save time, it can be use without the herbal infusion.  Pouring hot water over the herbs and steep for 20~30 minutes, strain and set aside. Fill up bath with tepid water, add in the herbs water, follow up with baking soda, vinegar and aloe vera. Mix the essential oils with honey, stir well and add to the bath water. Soak for 20~30 minutes. You may follow with After-sun spray if desire.

After-sun Spray Recipe

1/2 cup distilled water

1/4 cup Witch hazel lotion

1/4 cup aloe vera gel or juice

8 drops Lavender essential oil

2 drops Chamomile essential oil

1 drop Geranium essential oil

1 tsp honey

Add the water into an spray bottle (8ounce or larger), follow with witch hazel lotion and aloe vera. Combine the essential oils and honey, mix well and add into the water mixture. Shake well. Labeled. Apply freely to the burn skin several times a day, avoid eye area and remember to shake before each spray.

Beside the above, drinking cool peppermint tea will have a mild cooling effect on whole body. Get plenty of rest and drink lots of fluids. A cool compress to the forehead, or a cool foot bath could also helps.
